Behind CPSN with Rick: Meet our Rostering & Support Coordinator

Rick Handa is CPSN's Rostering Coordinator and Support Coordinator where each day he ensures the right people are in the right place at the right time. With a puzzle like mix of shift planning and problem solving, he helps support both our Staff and clients, with a can do attitude and calm nature. Rick describes CPSN as a supportive, down-to-earth, and purpose driven place to work. He finds it rewarding to know his behind-the-scenes work makes a real difference.

What is your role at CPSN and what does a typical day look like for you?

I’m a Rostering Officer here at CPSN, (and now also a newly qualified Support Coordinator) which basically means I’m the behind-the-scenes person making sure the right people are in the right place at the right time.

My day is a bit of a puzzle, juggling shifts, responding to changes, and making sure our Clients and Staff are supported. No two days are ever the same, and that keeps things interesting!

I’ve also been going out on the road regularly for home visits to meet with new and existing clients in my new role as a Support coordinator, and that has been a great experience so far.

How long have you been with CPSN? And what has been your favourite thing you’ve worked on in that time?

I’ve been with CPSN for just about a year now. In that time, my favourite part has been seeing how a well-done roster can really impact someone’s day, for both the Staff and the Clients. It’s rewarding to know those little behind-the-scenes actions make a real difference.

“I’m motivated by the chance to make a real difference - even if it’s in ways people don’t always see. I know that when the roster runs smoothly, it means someone’s getting the care they need and a Support Worker gets to do what they love. That matters to me.”

Are there any common misconceptions about CP or the Disability Ecosystem?

One big misconception is that all Support Work is the same. In reality, every person and family has their own unique needs, and organisations like CPSN really get that. I love that we take a personal approach, not just a Clinical one.

Outside of work, what are we most likely to find you doing? What are your hobbies and interests?

When I’m not working, I’m usually hanging out with my wife and daughter, Siya. We love getting out and exploring, whether it’s checking out local festivals (like the KaBloom flowerfields, which I highly recommend!) or just relaxing together. I’m also big on creativity, whether that’s writing, (journaling, quotes or poetry) brainstorming new ideas, or just daydreaming about the next cool project.

What are your top three tips you can share that you’ve learnt from being in your role and having the life experience you do?

1. Flexibility is your best friend - things change fast, and staying calm helps a lot.

2. Communication is everything. The clearer you are, the smoother things run.

3. Always keep the people behind the roster in mind. Every shift matters to someone.

At CPSN, people are our purpose and passion. With passionate employees like Rick, who champion flexibilty, compassion, communication and connection, we continue to lead as a trusted Support service for those with CP in the community.
