It was a wonderful morning with several CPSN Team members, Support Workers and clients attending. Lots of laughter and non-stop giggling echoed across the court at Werribee’s Eagle stadium.
Wyndham Basketball Association players and coaches patiently guided us through some warm-up drills of how to manoeuvre our chairs, line ourselves up and shoot a goal** - and to our surprise, a few of them happened too!!
Some of our CPSN staff were even congratulated along the way for how they manoeuvred themselves with ease and speed around the court, despite having never played wheelchair basketball!
Our staff members revealed that it was quite strenuous on their arms and hands - blisters and bruises were all part of the experience! There was lots of jostling to try and grab theball off one another as we chased each other up and down the court, wheeling with our arms and hands as fast as we could go. Many of us couldn’t stop smiling as we were having so much fun, our cheeks hurt from laughing!

At the end of the session we were tired, exhausted, but very happy. We all had a new-found appreciation and respect for all the time, hard work and training that is invested into becoming a professional Basketballer and appreciating what skills are needed in order for it to look effortlessly easy.
We are all looking forward to another event next year and we’ve all decided, it’ll be bigger next year!
Many thanks to Wyndham Basketball Association and their Inclusion and Welfare Department, epecially Kylie and coach Damian for making it happen. They are always looking for new players in their all abilities teams, and you can find out more about them here.
** It should be noted that for playing Wheelchair basketball, the goals are set to a lower height than the standard height of a basketball ring.
